Day 25

  • I got everyone's rhetorical analyses
  •  Some people did not turn in their outlines on dropbox. 
3. Workshop time!!!
  • Warm up
    • Switch desks and give feedback on the person's outline
  • Powerpoint
    • Get into groups of 4 and give feedback on each other's powerpoints.
    • Keep in mind these criteria:
      • Are slide titles easy to comprehend?
      • Is the amount of text appropriate?
      • Are graphics and font clear?
      • Is the design appealing?
      • Is it easy to understand?
  • Presentation
    • In new groups of 4 give feedback on each other's presentations
    • Keep in mind the follow criteria:
      • Can you hear the speaker?
      • Is there good eye contact?
      • Are there little to few "ums," "oohs," or other filler words?
      • Does the speaker have good posture and does not move needlessly.

Homework: 
Turn in your paper on Compass2g, Sunday, December 1st is the deadline.
Outline of presentation should be in dropbox by Friday. Use this outline as your guide. I highly, highly suggest to start making your powerpoint or prezi presentation during thanksgiving as well. We will discuss it in class. Here is a rubric to help you out.

  • Due Date for Final draft is December 1st. NO later.
  • Grades will only be discussed in Office Hours or by appointment.
3. Introduction to Oral Presentations
  • Worth 15% of your final grade
  • Why? In the US, you have to do presentations ALL the time. 
  • Write about your public speaking experiences here. Anonymous of course. :D
  • Next- Compare these two rhetorical analyses. One is of a commercial and one is of an article. Find two differences and two similarities. 
  • Now look at this Prezi. What does it do well? What does it do wrong? (there are no right or wrong answers here)
  • Using this outline as a guide, unscramble the steps of Oral Presentation with the handout I will give you.
4. Visual Aids- Content
First, let's compare this two youtube videos. First one and then the second one. Use a handout I will give you to analyze. 
Now, let's watch this powerpoint. Use another handout to fill out the answers.


Homework:
Final draft of Rhetorical Analysis is due December 1st on Compass. 
Writer's Help Exercise- Passive vs. Active Voice
Pick a commercial you want to do. Please put your selection in this google.doc.
Advice for picking a commercial:
    • Should be in English.
    • 30 seconds to 1 minute and 30 seconds long.
    • Video quality should be good.
    • Should have enough for you to analyze. 
    • Everyone must do a different commercial.

  • Get into groups. Use the internet to find out a definition. Share what you think on Primary Wall. 
  • Next let's look at this powerpoint together
  • Watch this youtube video. What is working in this video?
  • Get back in your groups. Write two things that could be good and two things that could be bad with peer-reviewing. 
  • Read this comment list. Discuss what is good and bad about these comments.
  • Now, evaluate this paragraph.  You can use the comment tool on Microsoft Word
3. Article Mini-lesson
  • Watch this powerpoint and fill out the sheet as we work together. 
Homework: Work on your draft to show your classmates. Fill out this template to help you get a good peer-review.

  • Let's take a fun quiz (not for a grade).
  • Next, write what a Rhetorical Analysis essay is about on Primary Wall. 
3. Writing Introductions and Conclusions in Rhetorical Analysis

  • Let's start on this powerpoint 
  • First, let's work on introductions.
  • Now thesis statements.
  • What thesis statement did you write from last class? Switch with a partner and critique. A good thesis statement should be:
    • Debatable
    • Not too wide, not too narrow
    • Analyzing the essay, not your opinion on the topic. 
    • Be polite! :)
  • Let's look at some conclusions.
Homework:
Write an introduction for your analysis essay. Be sure to include the thesis statement we critiqued in class today.
